Banele | Crawling/standing/walking, Drive, Empathy/ Lack thereof, Fathers, Frustration, Parental protection, Self-regulation, Sibling Rivalry, Support
The family is at home together on a weekend. It is morning and breakfast porridge is being prepared and handed out. Banele is crawling and cruising around the furniture. When his food arrives he vocalises and cries when it is too hot for him to eat. Dad tries to cool it quickly and hands the bowl to mom to continue. He picks Banele up and gives him a bottle to drink while waiting.
Thando and Zanele are having an argument about whose plate belongs to whom and mom expresses that Zanele always wants to have her way even if she is wrong. As the argument continues, one of the brothers, sitting on the floor behind dad’s chair, asks if he may pray. The family becomes silent and in unison prays over the food.
Mom is still cooling Banele’s food, encouraging him to wait every time he begins to grumble or cry. When his food is cool enough for him to eat his sits on dad’s lap while being fed - he swallows mouthfuls of porridge.
